I did it! (Kinda sorta) by Kludge

Those who have been here for a while likely know of my constant laments, but for those who otherwise do not know: I’ve been unemployed my whole life. Other than the obvious financial part that comes with that issue, it’s been just as much of an emotional struggle with major hits to my self worth and all that.

But today, that has changed. (Well, for a little while anyway.)

For the next few months, I will be doing scenic carpentry—and other stagecraft-related tasks—for work! Real work! As I had mentioned in December, scenic carpentry is something I kind of just stumbled into last Fall, and it quickly grew into a strong interest. Getting employed in general is already an enormous feat in itself for me, but the fact that it is specifically something I’ve recently become deeply passionate about is an even more amazing thing.

Wow! Lots of exclamation points today to convey my excitement.

Of course, I wish that I could have gotten regular normal employment that I could depend on for a longer period of time, but this is the best I can do for now, and I’m already very pleased. And considering my nonexistent history of employment, I really wanted to share that I got a job, even though it is a temporary one. I feel incredibly lucky that all these things came together as they did (and the competition was very low for this position), and I can finally have some genuine employment to include on resumes–aside from the hodge podge of volunteering, and trying to explain my whole thing with art commissions on it…

Yep, that is all. I would love it if you would share something good that happened to you recently so I can celebrate with you too.

I did it! (Kinda sorta)

    Congrats! :D

Even if it’s not a permanent job—it definitely gives you “work experience” for future resumes! I wonder…..if you have a local theater group, would this be a skill where you might find employment there, too. There are opportunities for this particular skill out there, but hunting them down is probably the harder part—best of luck! :D

I don’t really have much exciting “good things”…..but I just celebrated my 33rd year of working at the Library. It was my first place of employment and I’m still here—and I hope to retire from there within the next 10 years or less. And I have 95% of my plans solidified to go to AnimeExpo as my 50th birthday celebration this summer—I have the place to stay and my convention tickets purchased, I just need to book the flight. :)

Thanks so much. I did nose around online for any local theatres a little while ago, but either they are not open for paid positions, or they are within universities that utilize students instead. But I'll still keep a lookout for this and other related projects. I have just been enlightened that carpentry like this extends past the theatre and into events of every kind, so that's super exciting to think about. I just have to keep learning and doing.

Congratulations on your 33rd year at the library. It's so cool knowing that was your first place of employment too. We've already chatted briefly about how great the library is, but gosh, what a great place for anyone to be. Hope you have lots of fun at AnimeExpo this year and that it's not too crowded. Conventions aren't really my thing, but I did get to go to AnimeExpo in 2016 out of curiosity and since I had some friends who were going.

Other than things like Habitat for Humanity (I don't know if that's volunteer or paid work)--I'm not familiar with things involving carpentry. But I really hope that you are able to find something to suit your new skills and love! :)

Thanks! :D I know I'm hoping to retire by 57--so that will see me at 40 years at the Library. I worked seasonal/part-time while in high school and college and was offered a full-time opportunity after getting my Associate's--so, I'm very lucky to have found a place I love to be, as well as a staff that's always been great to work with.

I went to AX in 2015 with the same person I'm going with this year--there were a few activities we never had the chance to try in 2015 (the Butler Cafe was booked up almost the entire time!). So, we're hoping to try some of them this time around. And it'll be nice to hang out with my friend again--we haven't been able to since we went to SakuraCon in 2018..........we live in two different states (IL and ID), so we are mostly pen-pal friends, but we've gone to numerous conventions together across the U.S. I think "Convention Fun" depends a lot on if you're with friends or alone. Sometimes its okay to do some things alone, but big conventions are a lot more fun to do with friends! :D Because I'm getting older and I'm getting less and less fond of travelling by airplane--I think this will be my last trip out of my home state, so I'm glad I get to spend my last trip with a good friend. :)
